Haiti: The Future Starts Now.. An Update From WFP’s Executive Director

Dear Sire,

I have just returned from Haiti, where I went to personally assess the situation on the ground, and to meet with those leading this incredible humanitarian relief operation. The depth of grief and the massive needs this earthquake has left in its wake were heart wrenching. Parts of the capital Port-au-Prince look worse than many war zones. What has unfolded is still an unbelievable reality for the people of Haiti.

This is the most complex relief operation WFP has ever launched. Haiti’s entire supply chain infrastructure has been devastated, and we have been faced with starting an operation from scratch. Our capacity to ramp up the operation is growing on a daily basis, and food is reaching people, even if we wish we could do more, quicker. Continue Reading »

RP tourism gets boost from foreign media

The Department of Tourism (DOT) lauds the series of positive publicity for the country from the foreign media, following TIME’s travel piece on Manila and CNN’s features on Boracay windsurfing and the Filipino long Christmas celebration.

“The wave of publicity certainly helps usher in a good year for tourism.  More importantly, the optimism of the foreign media reinforces our image as a desirable destination,” said Tourism Secretary Ace Durano.

In the January 25th issue of TIME Asia, the city of Manila was portrayed as “beguiling and reinvigorating for even the most world-weary” by correspondent Lara Day.  The Hong Kong-based writer, photographer and editor for TIME and Travel + Leisure Southeast Asia however lamented that the country is less-frequented by travelers mainly because of a “flawed image problem.” Continue Reading »
