Romeo and Bernadette by Repertory Philippines

rnb_crisnpj

Seems I’ve been making the rounds in cinemas and theatre lately. Chanced upon a slot to watch Romeo and Bernadette when I bumped into a dear friend, Dingdong Rosales (thank you so much and see you again soon!) at the RENT Press Preview and Company Night.

Romeo_burnadette_logo_bio3

Superbly directed by Joy Virata/Rem Zamora and features young stage veterans Cris Villonco and PJ Valerio. What really makes me rave about this play aside from the simple yet avant garde set design and authentic 60′s frocks is the Shakespearean era language (which PJ Valerio performed flawlessly) and the Brooklyn accent which the rest of the cast have definitely acquired to perfection. Makes you want to chew gum and talk that way right after haha!

The play is set on the premise that Romeo, didn’t die (acording to this Brooklyn Guy who wants to hit it with a Brooklyn Girl after seeing said Shakespeare’s play). No, he just downed a sleeping potion that konked him out for a few centuries. He then finds himself in 1960 Brooklyn, chasing a girl he believes is his beloved Juliet. It’s not Juliet alright..it’s Bernadette, the daughter of a mafia boss. So, after centuries Romeo again finds himself in a vicious love triangle of sorts.

Need I say that I highly recommend to watch this show? It’s great for a pre/post Valentine date..for a change, have some LOLs!

KPop Sensation 4Minute in Manila: Press Conference

P1010693

KPop has been all over the airwaves since the F4 phenomenon. Eventhough tagalized or in their native tongue, we Filipinos still move and groove to their music, fashion and even food.

4MIMUTE (Ji Hyun, Ga Yoon, Ji Yoon, Hyun A, and So Hyun) was my first time to cover a KPop group (thank you MCA Music, Inc. again) and admittedly have not really heard much about them. But now I love their “Hot Issue” and “What A Girl Wants” songs.

They donned what I call “Cosplay Frocks” (you know, short skirts, checkered patterns, knee-high socks, boots, doll-curly hair..look at the photos) which were very cute and all the rage with teenagers nowadays be it for cosplay convention or just hanging out with friends.

The presscon was quite short and they had an interpreter but it was refreshing to hear them say “Salamat po” when their Manila based fans presented them with their very own cute doll replicas hehe!

So, what are you waiting for..get a copy of their albumFor Muzik which is in CD + DVD format available in major music stores nationwide.

Invictus 2009: His people needed a leader. He gave them a champion.

invictus

I have been keenly waiting for Invictus for a lot of reasons; South Africa holds a soft place in my family’s heart because my father has spent more than a decade in and out of said country during his lifetime and needless to say we have been greatly influenced by its culture, music, politics, etc.; Morgan Freeman has been a favorite since I was a kid and in my opinion, born to play the role of Nelson Mandela; Matt Damon has fiercely adapted the South African dialect for his role and Clint Eastwood as director (also my father’s favorite) is a mixture for an epic flick.

This silver screen adaptation of the true story of how Nelson Mandela in his first term as the South African President, together with the captain of South Africa’s rugby team, united their country through the former’s endorsement of rugby and the World Cup in 1995 is very poignant, deeply depicts the apartheid-torn country..plus Oscar nominations, need I say more?

A must-see for idealistic teenagers, great  for world history flick review and for everyone who believes that the spirit can triumph against any obstacle.
