Valentine’s Day: Keep Haiti in Your Hearts

This Friday marks just one month since the unforgettable January 12th earthquake that changed the lives of millions in Haiti forever. So much has been done, and so much more remains.

This has been our most complex humanitarian operation ever. Our team on the ground has worked harder than we thought possible, doing whatever we could to get food to the hungry. While we have faced enormous challenges, food is now reaching larger and larger numbers of people, bringing families the relief they so badly need.

Women are at the front of the line, receiving WFP coupons which provide two-weeks worth of food. Shalina, a mother of seven children, is thankful for the food she has received:
“We sleep in a tent across the road. WFP has given me rice, peas and biscuits… My dream is for my children to grow up healthy and be educated.”

More than two million people have been reached, and this is just the beginning. The world has come forward with immense generosity this past month to support from afar the suffering we see up close every day.

Tourism growth seen as transport industry picks up

The Department of Tourism remains hopeful about high-traffic inbound travel following the improving global economic outlook, noting reported highlights in the transport industry recently.

“We are expecting a substantial boost in tourist arrivals this year given the efforts of the airline industry to cope with the competitive market. Also, initial reports of our partner stakeholders in the transport sector indicate a rising shift in focus from the OFW market to mainstream holiday travelers, which would translate to higher seat allocation for tourists,” said Ace Durano, Secretary of Tourism.
