The evening of May 21 etched a mark in Philippine music as 12 fresh and original Filipino composers graced the grounds of the SM Skydome for the Filscap song writing competition. After several screenings, only the crème dela crème made it through among the myriad of entries, and these songs were reveled on this grand night.

MCA Music’s newest power-pop artist, TOTO SORIOSO, bagged the grand prize as well as the first prize in the rock category for his entry “Wag Mong Isipin,” which he wrote and performed, and earned him the grand cash prize and the opportunity to participate in the Song Summit 2010 Conference in Sydney Australia this June. MCA’s newest band is, hands down, a supergroup. Undoubtedly, a true Pinoy rock fan would recognize these names: Gabby Alipe (guitar) and Jan-jan Mendoza (drums) from Urbandub! 8 Toleran (guitar) of Queso! Buwi Meneses (bass) of Parokya Ni Edgar (whoa!)! All in one band! The expectations, good and bad, are to be expected. Is this a vanity project for those involved? Happily, the answer, evident on every song from their eponymous album, is no. Their collective sound is not actually dependent on their musical and nominal reputations (and for the record, they do play really well on the album)… it is actually defined by their hitherto unknown vocalist/songwriter and band namesake: Franco.
