The Department of Tourism (DOT) leads Manila’s first joint fluvial procession for the 15th century patron saint of the homeless, Our Lady of the Abandoned. Devotees and tourists are expected to flock to the event which concelebrates the fiestas of three parishes which include Mandaluyong, Sta. Ana and Marikina.
Organized by the DOT in partnership with the three said parishes, the fluvial procession of the Our Lady of the Abandoned is seen as another potential tour package which presents the colorful religious rites of the Filipinos. Kicking off at the Guadalupe Ferry Terminal, passing Escolta, down to the Sta. Ana Ferry Station and then to Mandaluyong, the fluvial parade will present the three images of Our Lady from the three parish churches. According to Tourism Secretary Ace Durano, “More than just a religious ritual, this colorful event is also great spectacle for tourists as it highlights our culture of deep spirituality.”
On his part, DOT Undersecretary Oscar Palabyab said, “The concelebration of the three parishes is a symbolic unification of these communities. The event can be also gleaned as a wonderful thanksgiving to God for granting us peaceful and swift elections.”
The fluvial parade likewise aims to stir awareness for the continued clean-up and conservation of the Pasig River. “It’s a good venue to promote green tourism as well with the use of ferry boats, a pollution-free transportation. Traversing the Pasig River instills a sense of conservationism, as we are reminded to care for our country’s waterways,” said DOT Undersecretary Eduardo Jarque, Jr.
At present, the DOT is conducting river tours via the Pasig River Ferry Cruise, which includes stops at sites such as heritage houses in Sta. Ana, the old Manila Boat Club, the Jones Bridge, and the Malacañang Park.
