The Nutcracker at CCP..a royal treat indeed!

Imagine my excitement when I got this awesome invite from the Department of Tourism and the Cultural Center of the Philippines:

Subject: The Nutcracker show and photo shoot
Date: Tuesday, December 1, 2009, 12:10 AM

Hello Sire,

Just in case you want to watch The Nutcracker at CCP Main Theater, and also take photos, let me know. I can provide two free tickets for you.

OMG-ness as in uber jump for joy! My sis and I have been avid ballet fans since time immemorial..we watched the Russian Ballet perform The Nutcracker a few years ago..plus CCP’s The Firebird (also a few years ago) was fabulous! We watched the Dec. 12 8pm slot and gladly amazed that our Filipino ballet dancers are still up to par with the international scene. The performance was flawless (choreography is by Noordin Jumalon after V. Vainonen and L. Ivanov) cast and orchestra alike, like being transported to a magical world plus Ms. Margie Moran Floirendo performed onstage too..a royal treat indeed!

Ballet Philippines is CCP’s resident dance company. Its audience represents a cross-section of Manila’s populace, including local and international visitors. Touring internationally, the company presents indigenous Filipino creations as well as uniquely Filipino interpretations of internationally recognized masterworks. Each year, its outreach and educational programs introduce new generations of audience members not only to dance, but also to music and visual arts.

BP’s current artistic director is Paul Alexander Morales, a dancer, choreographer, theater director, and independent filmmaker.

The Nutcracker has become perhaps the most popular of all ballets, performed primarily around Christmas time.

MANILA, Philippines - Ballet Philippines

(http://www.philstar.com/article.aspx?articleid=525851&publicationsubcategoryid=79) brings the magic of Christmas with its re-staging of The Nutcracker slated from Dec. 3 and 6, 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.; Dec. 4 and 5 at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m.; and Dec. 12 at10 a.m., 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., at the CCP Main Theater Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo, CCP Complex, Roxas Blvd., Pasay City.

This much-loved ballet classic follows the adventures of young Marie, who receives a magical present one Christmas Eve. Her gift is a nutcracker doll from her godfather, the mysterious Conde de Montaña (Drosselmeyer), a toymaker and inventor who, seemed to have many more surprises in store for her that night.

Later in the evening, (under the Christmas tree where Marie fell asleep after the party) she witnesses a series of fantastic happenings — toys coming to life, a battle between the wicked army of a Mouse King and the valiant toy soldiers, and the nutcracker doll transforming into a handsome prince right before her eyes.

Traveling through a snowstorm to the Kingdom of the Sweets, Marie and the Nutcracker Prince meet the Sugar Plum Fairy, who, impressed by both their courage treats them to a feast of international delights. Marie wakes up the next morning with the nutcracker by her side, and the memory of the most magical Christmas in her heart.

Set in the American colonial period, Ballet Philippines’ 2009 production of The Nutcracker ballet is all about Christmas, both in its essence and its trappings — a tale about young dreams and one’s journey to overcome life’s challenges and discover the magic in one’s self. The visual pageantry is complemented by a live accompaniment of the Manila Symphony Orchestra on special play dates.

I hope more Filipinos will support our culture and arts because it is definitely an indispensable unit of our humanity. Children should be allowed to experience and enjoin cultural and art related activities early in their development. Art,s music, culture..its what makes us whole as a person, as a fmily and as a nation.
